DRINKING IN LA AT 26

or maybe 31

Landed in LA and headed to The Standard Hotel in Hollywood, a sweet hotel with a really 50’s California feel, spacious rooms, really minimalist with great details, and a wicked blue astro-turfed pool area where beers, cocktails and snacks were supped before hitting a handful of Hollywood bars. First up was Cobras and Matadors (7615 Beverly Blvd), a Mexican joint, which is apparently awesome but was too full to seat us so we nipped across the street to BLD - Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, for beers and an in-house charcuterie and cheese platter, plenty to go round, although in hindsight should have had more to line the stomach.

With a bit of food in our bellies we cabbed it to Hollywood Boulevard to the old faithful Frolic Room (6245 Hollywood Blvd), a great little dive bar, large pours, cracking juke box, cozy little place. Then, around the corner to the Beauty Bar sadly a little empty while we were there, well it was Sunday, but you can see it’s potential, quirky, with old photo booths and those old-hair-dressing-metal-head-thingys and perhaps the longest couch in the world. Then a few doors down to The Room (1626 N Cahuenga Blvd), a fantastic space, well dimly lit, low leather seating, great DJ, and a good booze selection. We then went across the street to The Burgundy Room(1621 N Cahuenga Blvd), where there was an intimate little gathering in this little dive with a punk rocker spinning some wicked tunes, could have stayed here for a while, and did. A couple of blocks away we went to the Powerhouse (1714 N Highland Ave), pretty hammered at this point, we even appeared to be a man down. I remember something to do with a plastic dart game, ACDC and an angry bouncer- your guess is as good as mine. An attempt to go to the Chateau Marmont on the way home proved unsuccessful as they had done last call, looked pretty cool though. So calling it a night we hit the 24 Hour Diner at our hotel, nothing like a rib eye and a beer at 3 am on a Sunday night. A successful first night.....
