NEW YEAR, NEW FINES.

Ringing in the 2010 comes with new provincial fines, with a doubling in alcohol related offences. The fine for being drunk in public raised to $115, and most other alcohol-related fines raised to $230, including:

  • Purchase by minor
  • Consumption by minor
  • Minor in liquor establishment
  • Minor in possession
  • Presentation of false identification
  • Consume liquor in a public place
  • Intoxicated in a public place
  • Supply liquor to intoxicated person
  • Permit intoxicated person on premises
  • Possess opened liquor in a motor vehicle

This new ruling comes alongside fines for using your cellphone in your vehicle and parking meters to be in effect for an extra 2 hours, until 10pm every day.

So it seems gone are the days of working late, jumping in your car, cracking a beer, calling up your mate on the way, parking without plugging the meter, getting hammered in a bar, picking up some teenage girls, plying them booze on the art gallery steps and urinating on the Olympic countdown sign.

No wonder they call it "no fun" Vancouver. Happy 2010!
