BEST PLACES TO MOP UP THAT HANGOVER

In my shortish time here in Vancouver, one thing I've noticed is that Vancouverites love their brunches. And as a result of this there are some pretty good places to go to sort your stomach lining out from the night before and prepare for the day ahead. Nothing quite hits the mark like the Full English breakfast pictured above, but there are some notables.

Sure there's the hotel spreads and the finer dining brunches, and they're great, but that's a bit fancy for me. When I'm in the throws of a stonking hangover I'm more of a fan of a good honest breakfast in a nice little cafe or diner that's not going to break the bank, and so here's bunch of the better breakfast spots in town:

Deacon's Corner, 101 Main@Alexander, ph.604.684.1555: On the edge of Gastown, this little gem does hearty portions of good, honest, no nonsense diner food in a no frills, laid back atmosphere. One of our favourites for really taking care of the night before. Must have: BLT, bacon patty, wrapped in bacon…say no more.

Medina Cafe, 556 Beatty@Dunsmuir, ph.604.879.3114: From the people that brought you Chambar, the smaller neighbour has been quickly recognized as one of the best breakfast places in the city. Inspired brunch items, great coffee and fantastic Belgian waffles served in a unique cafe atmosphere. Must have: anything on the menu

Habit, 2610 Main@10th Ave, ph.604.877.8582: Newly converted to funky retro breakfast, lunch, dinner spot offering up well executed classic brunch items, killer sandwiches, and stylized diner choices. Great looking room with 'make your own' cocktail bento boxes and the largest collection of Canadian whiskey in town. Must have: flatiron steak & eggs with a breakfast martini 'bento box'.

Little Nest, 1716 Charles@Commercial, ph.604.251.9994: Probably the healthiest option on this list, with fresh, local, organic emphasis that offers up great breakfast and lunch in a cozy setting. Very kid friendly neighbourhood favourite on the Drive, so bear in mind if you have a splitting headache. Must have: their legendary baked goodies.

Elbow Room Cafe, 560 Davie@Seymour, ph.604.685.3628: Infamous in Vancouver for rude service and the closest thing to a true greasy spoon that always has them coming back for more. This spot on Davie churns out traditional breakfast fare with bad attitude. Must have: burgers are always a good bet and don'y forget to ask your charming server for a coffee refill.

Lion's Den Cafe, 651 e15th Ave@Fraser, ph.604.873.4555: Small, super chilled 'Japarribean' cafe off Fraser that has a loyal local following and the most welcoming owners in the city. Well portioned plates in a no fuss atmosphere. Must have: anything with Ken's jerk sauce and a stubby of Red Stripe.

Seb's Market Cafe, 592 e.Broadway@Carolina, ph.778.371.9231: Great little brunch place on a quiet stretch of Broadway in Mt. Pleasant, nice and laid back with a little deck off the front. Great breakfast menu that's very neighbourhood orientated. Must have: their different takes on eggs benedict

The Templeton, 1087 Granville@Helmcken, ph.604.685.4612: great little proper retro diner on the Granville strip, with jukeboxes at the tables and a big old menu with good prices, that's definitely a popular spot for those in the know. Fantastic spot to start your day off. Must have: no that I care, but they've got good veggie options!

Bon's Off Broadway, 2451 Nanaimo@Broadway, ph.604.253.7242: And last but not least, this Vancouver legend boasts the best value breakfast in town, in a friendly,  bustling, grungy room complete with jukebox, odd chairs and 'cadillac' booth. Must have: their $2.95 2 egg breakfast (in the cadillac booth of course).

That should be plenty for you to be getting on with.
