AN ENGLISHMAN IN NEW YORK
I recently spent 5 days in NYC and oh my days... what a city it is for boozing! Here are my top 5 places that more than delivered after being recommended by some industry peeps.
Mayahuel (6th & 2nd Ave) a great gothic tequila/mezcal tavern in the East Village, try the Loop Tonic - Tequila, Chartreuse, Vermouth & celery bitters with lime OR the Amor Morado - Tequila with Sloe Gin, Violette Absinthe, grapefruit & lemon. For nosh, try the Camron Y Vieras Con Chorizo - seared shrimps, scallops stuffed with chorizo & roasted pepper. For something sweet try Churros Y Chocolate - mexican donuts served with spiced mexican chocolate and dulce leche, mmmm.
Little Branch (6th & 2nd Ave) a speakeasy spot, where a light goes on when they’re full… or is it not full? Who can keep up with these speakeasy secret codes? Impressive brown liquor bar. They have live jazz some nights, it would be fun to watch them perform on a stage the size of a New York bathroom. Oh and they serve drinks with metal straws, most accommodating ;)
Balthazar (80 Spring St) classic NY French Bistro with a lively vibe, eat the Steak Au Poivre and wash down with a Kronenburg or a glass of Cotes Du Rhones.
Pegu Club (77 W Houston St) had to have at least one cocktail here, classic old school bartending with premium school pricing! glad this visit was made night one when we still had money to burn!
Le Esquina (106 Kenmare St, between Cleveland St & LaFayette) now from outside this place looks a lot like a diner that serves Tacos and it does just that. But, beneath the surface, if you wander downstairs and walk through the bustling kitchen you will arrive in a cool candle lit Tequila den. Had some delicious crab, mango and corriander tacos washed down with my favourite Baja beer - Tecate. Which seems available all over NY.
